Adult Survivors of Child Abuse - Cowra Support Group Valid as at: 08.04.2020
During the COVID-19 pandemic Adult survivors of child abuse can no longer meet once a month to share strategies to enjoy a better life. However support is still available by phone or on the web. See contact details. Many survivors are currently overwhelmed by the situation. Resources are available on demand including strategies and fact sheets.
It is not about counselling. It is about getting support from a facilitator with a similar background and a great understanding of the hurdles in the way of recovery from child abuse.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the office building is closed but the services of Brighter Futures are still available. Please use the listed contact details. Brighter Futures works with families with young children, to build on things that are going well and address things that are not going so well. We support all types of families facing all kinds of challenges. Brighter Futures is a voluntary program - this means that while families must be referred to us, it is up to them whether or not they take part and they choose when they leave the program. Families can 'self-refer' to Brighter Futures or are referred by Family and Community Services, a community organisation, or an individual like a GP or child care worker. Family and Community Services pays for the program and screens all referrals for eligibility.

Depending on where clients live, services may include:
  • Someone to talk to about what's happening in the family and any things they may want support with
  • Parenting programs to support the parent/s to develop new skills and be the kind of parent/s they want to be
  • Home visiting to provide support to work on the things of concern to the family
  • Access to child care to encourage child's development
  • Support to access other services the child/children or family might need like counselling, speech therapy or health needs

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the office is closed but we are supporting families via phone and offering Activity Packs for our client families with books and activities in them. We will be running groups again and doing home visits as soon as possible.

Usual services are: Women specific service funded to provide information, advocacy and support to women and children accessing the court system for protection from domestic violence. Services provided before a court appearance include:
  • Information about the court process, AVO conditions and any other relevant matters
  • Practical information such as how to find the court, where to go once a client arrives at court etc
  • Liaise with Police, Solicitors, Court Staff and other support workers on a client's behalf
  • Advocate on a client's behalf
  • Refer clients to appropriate services

The Cowra Information & Neighbourhood Centre take on the vital task of connecting the whole community. We pride ourselves that we are for everyone and stand behind our diversity. We are the community anchor that breaks the cycle.
CINC offers a vast array of services – this ensures there is something for everyone. We are very much a one stop shop, and if we cannot deliver the service you are after we will endeavor to make the connection for you. Our programs include Community Engagement, Home Modifications & Maintenance Services, Family Support Service, Youth Connect and Grenfell Outreach Services.
During the CODIV-19 pandemic, CINC’s buildings are closed until further notice, which also means that any other visiting services that would normally attend CINC are no longer available face to face. All CINC services are still available, and we encourage anyone needing assistance to please call us on 6340 1100. Monday – Friday sees our partnerships with Coles Second Bites, Cowra Hotbake and Woolworths provide essential food items to the community which are being placed out front for you to collect. Please adhere to the signage around stating you are required to be 1.5 meters from others as you collect. We are doing our best to stay engaged with you through phone, email, zoom meetings and more. Disability Advocacy NSW Valid as at: 04.05.2020
DA helps people of all ages with any type of disability or mental illness get fair treatment. Our Central west office provides service to Bathurst, Orange, Cowra, Parkes and Mudgee.
An advocate can provide individual advocacy and help get fair treatment: from government departments, disability services, other services and businesses, at work,university, school or TAFE, with accommodation, transport and access, with legal, healthcare or money issues; and with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the Disability Royal Commission.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, DA NSW has suspended face-to-face service delivery. DA NSW continues to deliver advocacy support services to clients across all our funded regions. Our staff are now working remotely, and we are available via phone and email and through our website.

Hearing Australia is a Government agency and is dedicated to helping people manage their hearing needs. We provide hearing assessments, rehabilitation (fitting hearing aids and alternative listening devices) and communication Training. Home-Start Cowra, Canowindra & Weddin Valid as at: 06.05.2020
Home-Start Cowra, Canowindra & Weddin provides support to families with a child/ren under 8 years, living in Cowra, Canowindra or the Weddin Shire. Home-Start CCW provides professional home visiting, informal support groups, parent education and information, early literacy activities and events, child centred activities, community education and events, supported referrals and advocacy. Home-Start CCW is free and all enquiries are welcome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, home and office visits are limited. They are individually assessed, based on need & current health of the individuals/ family. All groups have been postponed until further notice.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Legal Aid NSW is continuing to provide services to our clients and the general public. Our services and ways of operation are all listed below. Legal Aid NSW’s focus is to seek to resolve issues as early as possible, trying to help clients avoid the need for litigation.

Free and confidential face-to-face legal advice, and in some cases Court appearances on most legal issues, including:
  • Criminal law – people facing criminal charges and ADVOs
  • Family Law (issues arising from family breakdown (especially matters involving children), domestic and family violence and child support)
  • Civil Law (everyday problems including employment, fines, social security and other government benefits, tenancy and housing, consumer issues - credit, debt and mortgage matters, discrimination, debts from car accidents, mental health and guardianship.)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we operate as follows: People can make a phone appointment to obtain Crime, Family and Civil Law advice by phoning the Cowra Courthouse.
For people charged with criminal offences, Legal Aid NSW will not be providing face-to-face advice or representation if not in custody, however we will assist by phone. During the COVID-19 pandemic we are definitely OPEN and available 5 days: Monday – Thursday 08:30-16:30; Friday 10am-1pm. The focus of the program is to provide families with support and assist in connecting them with services and programs that can assist.
Services we offer:
  • One on one family support
  • Parenting program: Tuning into Kids (next intake will be term 3 and accessed online)
  • Online new parents groups for Cowra and Young areas
  • Weekly phone-ins (a service where we just call once a week (can be more if needed) to check in with families, see how they are coping, if there are any referrals or information they require; and just to keep an eye on their well being and offer any suggestions and help
  • Craft/activity packs and competitions for the kids and families during COVID-19
Our service can be accessed by anyone. Our only criteria is that the family has a child 12years or under. Referrals etc can be made by schools, professionals and/or by the family themselves.
